Just a Girl: Preview
“Oh I’m just a girl, living in captivity
Your rule of thumb
Make me worry some
Oh I’m just a girl, what’s my destiny?
What I’ve succumbed to
Is making me numb
Oh I’m just a girl, my apologies
What I’ve become is so burdensome
Oh I’m just a girl, lucky me
Twiddle-dum there’s no comparison
Oh, I’ve had it up to!
Oh, I’ve had it up to!!
Oh, I’ve had it up to here!”
-“Just a Girl”, No Doubt
The anthem of every 90s bad girl, “Just a Girl” debuted in 1995 to major critical acclaim. It’s a wildly fun anthem. It’s defiant and disrespectful, and everything we stand for here at The Audacity. Written by Gwen Stefani (crush alert!), the song is about being majorly fed up with female stereotypes.
We wish we could say this song didn’t apply to the way we feel about being women today–but it still rings true.
We’re expected to be necessarily soft, feminine, delicate, polite and meek.
We won’t be. And you don’t have to be, either.
